Background of the study
Digitalization has transformed the media landscape, altering the nature of journalism and job security in significant ways. In Enugu East, media organizations have embraced digital technologies for content production, distribution, and audience engagement. This digital shift has redefined traditional roles, often leading to job redundancies, skill mismatches, and uncertainties about long-term employment among journalists (Nwosu, 2023). While digitalization has enhanced efficiency and broadened audience reach, it has also introduced challenges such as the rise of automated news gathering, increased competition from online platforms, and shifts in revenue models (Eze, 2024). Journalists now face the dual pressure of adapting to new technological demands while coping with potential job insecurity. These challenges have sparked debates about the future of media employment and the need for skills development programs. This study examines the impact of digitalization on job security in media organizations in Enugu East, investigating both the opportunities and risks associated with the digital transformation of journalism (Okafor, 2025). It aims to provide recommendations that balance innovation with the preservation of stable employment in the media sector.
Statement of the problem
Digitalization in media organizations in Enugu East has raised concerns about job security among journalists. The shift towards automated processes and online platforms has led to job redundancies and skill obsolescence. As traditional roles are redefined, many journalists face uncertainties regarding their long-term employment and career growth. This study seeks to understand the mechanisms by which digitalization affects job security and to identify potential measures that can mitigate adverse impacts. Addressing these issues is critical for ensuring the sustainability of employment in the evolving media landscape (Uche, 2024).
